Exploring why midlife isn’t about crisis but about honesty, shedding armor that no longer serves you, and embracing who you truly are—even when the economy says you can’t afford it.
Love the roundup, and thank you for sharing the exercise. ✨
I’m turning 50 in June and am so grateful I started reading Carl Jung over a decade ago. His models of personality and the psyche help me understand the shifts I’ve been experiencing, and give me a non-judgmental language to explain them to friends and family (and especially my husband 😅).
Now I only hope everyone who liked your notes will also take the time to do the exercise! It’s so easy to fall into the trap of thinking that scrolling and liking notes will be enough to make the changes we say we want. 😉
Hi Doris!! Thank you for reading and your comment!! And you’re welcome. Happy to share and hope you find it as useful as my clients gave! I am a huge fan of Carl Jung—- especially his teachings on shadow work. Have you dove into much of that?
Why, yes I have, thanks for asking. Jung is not just meaningful to me personally, he's also a big part of my work (Type & Relationship Coaching). Not sure what the etiquette is around sharing links to other platforms, but I made a video about shadow work for my YouTube channel with context (model of the psyche), exercises, and INFP/ENFJ examples. You can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_L-nBAO2W4E
I never really got into the stoics, and Jung's writing is definitely dense and convoluted af sometimes, but his models are so freaking elegant and make so much sense... yeah, I love it. 🤓
I learned about (his) shadow work through Carolyn Elliott PhD's book Existential Kink and it rocked my world and coaching work! I'm not well read on stoicism but value the art of taking emotion out of the equation from time to time. Or as Brooke Castillo used to say, let's separate the math (facts), from the drama (thoughts creating added emotion). Worth saying that this is more surface level than shadow somatic work! Anyway-- happy you shared your site and work here!! I'll be checking it out!
Hi, I enjoy your posts and listened to the pod with Julia Louis Dreyfus. But I feel a little excluded. I am nearlly 60 and dont feel it is too late to start this work. Even if you do "wake up" at 65 it is not too late. I have not woken up thinking its too late. I think Julia was very good on this as is Miranda July who lays bare her characters feelings about older women only to change her mind. It really is never too late to prioritise your needs.
I couldn't agree with you more, Lucy! As a matter of fact, every time I hear a financial planner talk to young people about investments and compound interest I want to scream- IT'S NOT TOO LATE FOR ME AT 45 TO BUILD WEALTH INTO MY 70'S WITH COMPOUND INTEREST. Not that you were yelling. I spoke with Donna Blevins on my podcast last month who is 78 and her attitude is everything like yours. It's never too late. Thank you for reading along and sharing your thoughts with me(us)!!
I'm new to substack and I was interested in the free sheet you are offering but cannot see where to find it? Could you please give me a pointer?
Hi Stuart and Welcome!! You should see the pdf at the end of the post! Let me know if you have any trouble downloading!
Ahh found it - thanks much appreciated!
