I thought my constipation was purely mental. A side effect of my brain refusing to let go of the idea that my boyfriend might know what happens behind closed bathroom doors. Turns out it's more...
Brilliant Ashley! I have never clued in to the hormonal link to constipation. This is one of those things that now that I see it I cannot believe I didn’t see it a couple years ago!! Wowza. I appreciate you bringing this to my attention and I’m going to do a deeper dive into it and start tweaking my levels.
I’ve had a similar experience with the podcast - several women sent it to me while I was listening and I sent it to several women- while they were listening 😂 it’s funny but also a clear sign that we are thirsty for information on what’s happening in our bodies and what we can do to move through these transitions!
Have you caught any of the podcasts with Dr. Mary Claire Haver? She’s making the rounds with her new book - recently listened to an interview on Mel Robbins, another host where discernment is of course necessary - yet it was timely with so many of the conversations we’re having online and beyond.
I know this post was written for women, and perimenopausal women at that. But I learned more about intestinal health and the role various hormones play than I'd known in my entire life. (This may account for why my guts are a mess.)
I believe this is my first time commenting, but I've been a reader/listener for a while and am always amazed at how timely and in sync your content is for what I'm currently going through!
I am obsessed with women's hormones and how they affect our everyday life and would love to hear where you are taking your course from as I want to be able to someday teach other women (and girls!) what I'm learning.
Also, as a recovering private poo-er/poo withholder, if I may offer some advice that has worked well for keeping things moving regularly & smoothly for me: 1-2 TBSP of Psyllium husk every morning and smoothies instead of juice (so you retain the fiber). Something that has helped me get over my aversion to poo-ing is having learned that it's the way our bodies excrete excess hormones (I tend to run estrogen dominant) so I imagine all the moodswings, pms, and increased breast cancer risk being flushed away with every BM.

Happy to spread the word and be of help!!
Ahhhh, so many truths. I was feeling the same way about this piece, that you felt about Holly Whitaker’s Recovering - which was also badass.
My eye doctor, yes my eye doctor, recently recommended the same podcast - we need more of this to be making the rounds. It’s important … shit 😉
Thank you Liz!!! That’s great to read.

Same. Book is on the fall reading list. I want to have an arsenal for holiday chats with anyone who will listen 😂

Yes! I’ve been referring her!! Haven’t read her book yet.
Thank you for the mention! But thanks to this post I have to add shit to the list of things I have to worry about in perimenopause 💩
You're welcome AND I'm sorry... it's shitty, I know

Thank you, Dr. Kelsch.
Glad to be of service! Let's make that gut less of a mess and more of a smooth operator ;)

Thanks for talking shit this week!
